The world’s only practitioner who has interviewed both sides of hundreds of abusive relationships
A Two-Course DocuSeries Featuring the Work of Don Hennessy
Presented by Street Smart Safety
Watch how Don Hennessy decodes the architecture of abuse
This course is grounded in Don Hennessy’s research with men who abuse women in intimate relationships, so we often use “he” for the abuser and “she” for the target. We also recognize that abuse can happen in any relationship, including LGBTQ+ relationships, and that people of any gender can cause harm.
For forty years, Irish relationship counselor and domestic abuse researcher Don Hennessy did what no one else has ever done before or since: He sat across from both sides of couples in abusive relationships — hundreds of them — for years — and decoded the architecture of abuse.
He mapped the exact process that the abuser deploys to keep the victim in endless checkmate – detailing how they select a target, invade her feelings and her mind, groom and regroom her – and ultimately, colonize her thinking. And in that process, he discovered the real motivation at the heart of long-term domestic abuse – revealing the abuser’s playbook that no one else has ever captured.
For the first time, Don Hennessy’s life’s work is brought together in a cinematic, evidence-based course series—revealing the hidden architecture of psychological control.
Two courses. Twelve episodes. One mission: To free victims from the brainwashing of abuse.
Told through Don’s groundbreaking insights, Joy’s three decades in law enforcement, and Laura’s lived experience across four generations of domestic abuse, The Anatomy of Evil gives women around the world — and the professionals who serve them — a map of long-term intimate partner abuse that the world has never had before.
This isn’t trauma porn. This isn’t “just leave.” This is the strategy, tactics, and ultimately, psychological liberation — revealed by the one man who finally saw what every long-term abuser has in common and how they entrap their target women.
Why We Fail Victims
For decades, every major framework for domestic abuse has focused on behaviors — anger, power, control, jealousy, threats, violence.
But Don Hennessy looked deeper, and focused on the intention driving those behaviors. And that changed what he saw.
Where the world has focused on:
Don saw more – much more: The deliberately engineered takeover of a woman’s mind and inner world — designed for the offender’s sexual dominance. A methodology and system of psychological colonization that is so consistent that Don saw it mapped across hundreds of cases. This is why traditional models fail victims: they describe what happens — not why it happens or how he gets in.
All of it unfolding in a predictable pattern — regardless of age, education, class, religion, or culture.
This is the paradigm shift: Domestic abuse is not a relationship problem. It’s an intentional psychological regime.
And once a woman understands the architecture, the spell breaks.
What felt like chaos, suddenly makes sense.
And what felt personal finally doesn’t, because it isn’t her…it’s him.
Because what felt like her failure was actually his design.
This is the gap that Don’s work fills. This is the clarity the field has been missing. And this is why this two-course series exists.
Once you see the architecture, you can never go back to “Why doesn’t she leave?”
Because you’ll finally understand why he never lets her go, and why so many women are killed at the hands of their intimate partner when they finally leave.
WHAT IS THIS “EVIL”?
Truthfully, not all harm is evil or intentional. But this is.
The “evil” in The Anatomy of Evil isn’t religious, metaphor, or melodrama. It is very human, based on the intention of one person to deliberately harm another person. Don relies on the definition of evil as described in M. Scott Peck’s seminal book: The People of the Lie: The Hope for Healing Human Evil (p 42):
“Evil seeks to kill, also that which kills spirit”.
The purpose of this type of abuse is to deliberately befriend the woman’s mind, kill her spirit then colonize both her mind and body.
Don Hennessy has seen this pattern in every single one of the long-term abusers and victims that he’s worked with. And he describes this evil and malevolence within the framework of these abusive long-term relationships: every abuser deliberately destroys the victim’s spirit and colonizes her for the purpose of dominating her for his sexual use. Every single thing he does, every strategy and tactic is devoted to this end.
Don uses the word ‘malevolence’ 51 times and the word ‘evil’ 62 times across his trilogy of books on domestic abuse. And he observes it as: the deliberate, systematic takeover of a woman’s mind — a psychological regime designed to dismantle her autonomy and to rebuild her around the offender’s sexual desire.
In other words, Don dares to say the quiet part out loud; sexual dominance is the basis of long-term domestic abuse that society has looked away from.
Not a bad temper. Not a “toxic relationship.” Not a misunderstanding.
But a domination blueprint for the purpose of unfettered sexual access. This is the missing piece in the puzzle of abuse. Essentially, what Don is saying is that if we cannot understand how he really gets in, then we cannot understand why she cannot get out.
Over the course of forty years, Don Hennessy uncovered this blueprint piece by piece — indescribable until now. So much so, that he had to develop his own language to describe the core mechanisms that he saw.
Don Hennessy’s Language to Describe Abuse
Psychephile
Don coined this term after recognizing that offenders use the same techniques as pedophiles — but directed at adult women and long-term partners of the psychephile. But the sequence is identical: targeting, grooming, isolating, conditioning, testing and eroding resistance.
“Psychephile” combines the roots of ‘psyche’ meaning mind or spirit, and ‘phile’ which comes from the Greek for friend). Which means that the abuser befriends the victim’s mind, identical to the process of controlling her, a process known in military and cult circles as ‘brainwashing.’
“I have coined this new word, psychephile, in an attempt to describe the deliberate tactic of befriending the woman’s mind that all intimate abusers use. As we have labelled child abusers paedophiles because they befriend children for nefarious purposes, the word can be useful in capturing the deliberate mind control that an intimate abuser instigates from the outset of the relationship.”
How He Gets Into Her Head: The Mind of the Male Intimate Abuser by Don Hennessy
Don notes that the end goal of the psychephile isn’t the connection of partnership or a mutual relationship as most people understand intimate relationships. It is: the total domination of the victim’s mind and body for the abuser’s unfettered sexual access — anytime, anywhere, on his terms.
A psychephile isn’t seeking intimacy. He is a sexual predator engineering possession.
Mind Colonization
In his first book, How He Gets Into Her Head, Don documents how offenders “befriend” the woman’s mind. He’s observed how they infiltrate her thinking, implant their own language, meanings, and interpretations in her mind (also known as coercive control) – to the point where her own inner voice actually begins to sound like his. Her instincts are weakened, his worldview takes root and her every thought is centered around whether this is something he would want her to think. He has truly colonized her mind.
From an interview with Don Hennessy:
“They (victims) feel unheard, totally confused, and uncertain of who they are as human beings… And…that’s by design. That’s by design of the abuser, and that’s part of the mental colonization process is that they (victims) can’t think straight. They don’t know what they want. They know what they don’t want…they don’t want that treatment anymore.
But if you ask them…what they do want, that they’re really unable to…to tell you that. No. They’re actually unable to make a choice, which is one of the things that really upsets me about most of the therapists that I know. They keep on telling me, oh, the woman has a choice. I’m saying, in her mental state, she has no choice.”
In other words, this is not influence. It’s occupation.
Sexual Brainwashing
“But many clients who have been brainwashed will go back to their relationship or be targeted by a new abuser unless they have some sense of how they ended up in the initial abusive relationship.” (p. 223-224)
“When we record and document the effects of (the psychephile/abuser’s) handiwork we find ourselves reading an extraordinary account of covert brainwashing.” (p. 225)
“We can assist the client in reviewing these options if we can unravel the effects of the brainwashing she has endured. The main voice in her head is the voice of her abuser.” (p. 239)
Together, these mechanisms form what Don spent four decades exposing:
A system of psychological slavery — the intentional reduction of a target woman’s freedom, identity, and agency for a skilled offender’s sexual benefit.
This is the evil that Don names. Not sensational. Not exaggerated.
Accurate. Documented. Deliberate.
But there is hope. Because as Don has observed across the hundreds of women that he’s worked with – once the target-woman sees this architecture of evil, she will begin to reclaim the first thing it tries to steal: her mind and her sense of self.
And once she can think clearly, without the voice of the abuser in her head, then she can make decisions based on her own behalf – whether she stays or whether she leaves. Because she is the only one who can gauge what is best for her.
Why We Teach Don’s Model
We teach Don’s model because it matches the real patterns that we ourselves have lived and seen — not the ones people wish were true.
“Don’s framework is the first to give precise language to the dynamics I’ve witnessed across four generations of domestic abuse in my family. It’s the missing piece survivors and support systems have been searching for.”
Laura Frombach, Street Smart Safety
“During my 28 years as a deputy sheriff, I responded to thousands of domestic violence calls. The dynamics that Don identifies match exactly what I saw in the field. His work offers rare clarity for both victims and professionals.”
Joy Farrow, Street Smart Safety
About Don Hennessy
Don Hennessy is one of the world’s most influential and unconventional thinkers on domestic abuse. He served as Director of the National Domestic Violence Intervention Agency in Ireland, where he did what no other practitioner has done before or since: he interviewed both halves of abusive relationships — hundreds of them — across decades.
Through this rare vantage point, Don uncovered a consistent psychological blueprint behind long-term intimate partner abuse. He documented how skilled offenders target, groom, embed, and ultimately colonize their partners’ inner world for sexual domination — a pattern so uniform that it overturned every traditional model of domestic violence.
Across his trilogy, he names the phenomenon for what it is: an intentional, malevolent psychological takeover — not miscommunication, not conflict, not “anger issues.” His work has transformed training for therapists, advocates, law enforcement, and faith communities, offering a clarity that survivors describe as life-saving.
This two-course docu-series is the first time Don’s full body of work has been translated into a cinematic, accessible format for victims, professionals, and the systems tasked with protecting them.
THE COURSES
COURSE 1 — HOW HE GETS INTO HER HEAD
The Architecture of Control.
5 Episodes | The Foundation
Before women can reclaim themselves, they need to understand what actually happened – the missing piece of the puzzle of domestic abuse. This course is based on Don’s first book: How He Gets Into Her Head: The Mind of the Intimate Male Abuser, and exposes the abuser’s blueprint:
- How he selects a target woman
- How he gains emotional access
- How he tests, assesses, and embeds himself
- How fights aren’t just fights — they’re how he learns what destabilizes her
- Why the apology-and-tenderness cycle isn’t a reset — it’s the system updating itself
- How he colonizes her mind and inner world
- How he uses entitlement and conditioning to sexually brainwash her
- How he engineers dependency
- Why she can’t leave
This course shreds the myth of “anger issues” as the source of abuse, and reveals the strategic, malevolent system operating behind closed doors, especially in long-term relationships.
It stops the victim blaming and shows how any woman can become a victim, irrespective of education, economics or religious belief. And It answers the question society that society has been demanding from victims for hundreds of years: “Why Does She Stay?”
COURSE 2 — STEPS TO FREEDOM
How Women Break the Spell and Reclaim Themselves — Whether They Leave or Not
5 Episodes | The Foundation
Based on Don’s book, Steps to Freedom: Escaping Intimate Control, this course is based on Don’s decades of experience in helping victims experience mental and emotional freedom. This course is not about forcing a woman to leave. It’s about helping her reclaim what the abuser took from her: her mind and her inner world.
- Why trauma bonding makes leaving so complicated
- Why the sequence of behaviors is the weapon — almost invisible when you only see one behavior at a time
- How escalation works — and how to stay safer
- Why the demands always escalate — and no level of compliance ends them
- The moment she stops believing him and why that becomes the turning point
- Why inner freedom emerges first
- How micro-changes rebuild identity
- How to plan quietly, safely, realistically
- What healing looks like – whether staying or leaving
Who It's For

The Promise
Both of these courses replace fear with clarity, confusion with pattern recognition, shame with truth, and isolation with understanding.
Don’s work finally focuses on the real problem: the abusive offender. And it reveals what we all need to understand: the abuser’s blueprint — revealed by the one man who listened to them and their victims — for forty years.
Because once you see the pattern, you can’t unsee it. And you are never the same.
