How Don Hennessy Became the Man Who Listened—And Discovered a Key Piece of Coercive Control
For more than forty years, Irish researcher and counselor Don Hennessy has been studying the psychology of coercive control — long before most of the world even had a name for it.
And long before gaslighting became a household term and coercive control was written into law, Don was sitting across from women whose partners were dismantling their identities piece by piece — and documenting exactly how it happened. Read our article What is Coercive Control.
He didn’t learn about all of this from textbooks or training manuals. Don is one of the founders who built the field from the inside out. From the counseling rooms of Ireland, Don spent four decades listening, observing, and recording the comments, tactics, and rationalizations of abusive men — and the lived reality of the women they targeted.
That’s what makes Don different. While most of the researchers heard everything from the victim’s standpoint, Don has studied offender strategy.
Learning Abuser Strategy
In the early years, he directed a relationship counseling center that served both men and women. And Don and his team were able to observe, for the first time, both sides of the relationship. So, he listened carefully — not to excuse, but to understand. And what he discovered was chilling. The men weren’t losing control. They were engineering it. They weren’t acting out of rage – they were executing a plan.
And by listening to the abusers just as carefully as he listened to their victims, (whom Don accurately calls “target women”), Don discovered something the world had missed. He saw the predictable, repeatable patterns that answer the age-old question: “Why doesn’t she leave?”
Don Hennessy has turned that question inside out. The real question, he says, is not why she stays — it’s how he controls her to stay. And that single shift changes everything: It moves the focus from her choices to his strategy. From her perceived weakness to his deliberate design. The Architecture of Mind Colonization
Don has mapped those designs with forensic precision — from grooming (and continual regrooming), conditioning, sexual brainwashing and language colonization — the entire architecture of psychological captivity. Then he held them up beside the words of the women who had lived through them and mapped the mind colonization process.
That’s how Don’s first book How He Gets Into Her Head was born — and with it, a new understanding of what domestic abuse really is. His subsequent books, How He Wins and Steps to Freedom built on that foundation. They showed both victims and professionals alike how to decode the abuser’s manipulative tactics. And most importantly, how systems must change so that abusers can no longer get away with it.
Today, Don Hennessy is recognized in Ireland as one of the foremost experts on domestic abuse and coercive control. But outside of Europe, his work remains one of the best-kept secrets in the field — until now. At Street Smart Safety, we’re proud to help bring Don’s voice to new audiences: survivors who need words for what they’ve lived, and professionals ready to see through the myths that keep women trapped.
Because if you truly want to stop abuse, you have to start where it begins —inside the mind of the abuser who plans it.
