Have you ever walked away from a conversation with your partner feeling like you’re in a brain fog? Asking yourself what the hell just happened? You might even feel dizzy and not sure of anything. including what you said yourself. You might feel…mind fucked. You just didn’t know it was a real thing that happens to real people, on purpose. You’re not crazy. And you’re not too sensitive or “reading into things.” If you’re feeling mind fucked in your relationship, there’s a good chance it’s because that’s exactly what’s happening. And it’s why some people (esp women) have a hard time leave abusive relationships.
Mind Fucking is Deliberate
Here’s what a lot of people don’t know: it isn’t you. And it isn’t just a “misunderstanding” or “how fights go” or “a personality clash.” Because when you can step back and look at enough of these moments side by side, they follow a pattern — the same handful of moves, in a different order, every time.
Your shifts what happened. They shift what you meant and who’s responsible. So, the time you walk away, you’re not defending your original point anymore — you’re defending your own memory and your right to even have a perception.
That’s the mind fuck. Not an argument that got out of hand. It’s a sequence run on you on purpose, ending with you doubting the one thing you should never doubt: your own mind. Here’s the reason that it’s hard to recognize it might not feel like an attack at first. It might feel like an ordinary conversation. It looks like your partner is just trying to help you see it clearly. It looks like love, or at least like someone who corrects you because they “care enough”.
Why It Works
That’s what makes it so confusing — because you can’t defend against the punch that you didn’t see coming, and you really can’t defend against one that’s been relabeled as concern.
Where it comes from
This isn’t theory. It’s research — research most people have never had access to, because almost no one has studied abusers in long term relationships.
But Don Hennessy has. He spent years interviewing men who abuse their partners. Not the women who survived them — the men themselves — one of the few (if not the only) researcher to do that. Because most of what we know about coercive control comes from survivors describing what was done to them. But Don’s work comes from the other direction: abusers describing, in their own words, what they did — and why it worked.
And Don found that a subset of abuser does this entirely on purpose. Not reactive. Not an escalating hothead. A deliberate pattern — refined over time and aimed at a single target: to fuck up what you believe about yourself and what you believe is real.
That’s why your brain fog isn’t a side effect. It’s the whole point.
Some People are Mind Fucking Pros
We use “mind fucked” here because it’s the way that most people feel when it happens to them. It honestly describes what it feels like from the inside. Many professionals call it ‘gaslighting’ and it does have a gaslighting aspect…but gaslighting doesn’t describe the particularly dangerous personality who uses mind fucking on the regular. But Don Hennessy did.
Don’s research gave us the word: a psychephile — a person who studies how someone thinks and feels so they can control them. But here’s the crazy part: they want to control them for unlimited sexual access. [If you haven’t read that piece yet, start here: What Is a Psychephile?]
So think about it…if the mind fuck usually results in sex (whether you want to have sex or not, you may be involved with a psychephile. You don’t have to have all the language yet. But just know this: what you’re feeling has a name, it has a pattern, and it is not something wrong with you.
Maybe this is you right now. Maybe it was you once, and you’re only now getting the words for it. Maybe it’s someone you love, and you’ve been trying to find the words to explain what you’re seeing. Wherever you’re standing, this is the beginning of a bigger conversation — one we’re building a full course around: how these patterns actually work, why it works, and how to see it through it enough to begin to get out. Or at least to see through the insanity of the mind fuck.
